3 Fun Toy-Based Games For All Ages

Working as an instructor at an Extended Day program and as a Camp Counselor, I've discovered that there are a million ways that kids keep themselves entertained, and a small percentage of those are interesting to adults. Although the kids having fun is the number one priority, if an activity is also entertaining for me, all the better. Here's three games I've found to be fun for everybody (five and up).

1. Origami Frog Jumping Contest

What You'll Need: Any kind of paper or light card-stock. Markers or other coloring tools.

First you have to learn how to make the frog. Instructions can be found here. Once you've done that, make one, jump it over something, and soon you'll draw a crowd. Show the kids how to make their own, and then have a contest to see whose jumps the farthest. Kids can use markers to color the frogs however they like. Have the kids try different materials and frog sizes to see what works the best.

2. Balloon Powered Lego Car

What You'll Need: A Balloon, and Legos.

The concept is that the Lego car is pushed along by the air escaping the balloon. You'll need a little engineering skill to get the balloon to sit in the car properly, but once you've gotten the idea, you can help kids make their own and have a race.

3. Dreidel

What You'll Need: A Dreidel. Virtually any collection of small things to act as tokens, options including crayons, sticks, marbles, or anything else you have on hand.

So I made a traditional Hannukah game into an all-year-round thing. Kids really seem to enjoy it, and it's always entertaining to test your luck. The traditional rules can be found here.
